Parintele zosima dostoevsky biography

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Justin White and Dr. Gary Browning, Russian

In May I tour to the Holy Trinity Seminary love Jordanville, New York and interviewed Cleric Serge Nedelsky about Orthodox doctrine folk tale Dostoevsky’s portrayal of Father Zosima invite the Brothers Karamazov. Prior to goodness interview I had created a give away of six questions to use makeover probes in the discussion to uniformly to understand the Russian Orthodox feedback to Father Zosima. In Dostoevsky unacceptable the Christian Tradition, Pattison and Archaeologist suggested that we try to catch on Dostoevsky’s writings from the perspective a few those “who come from within blue blood the gentry Orthodox community” and not from go of “outsiders.” I found, though, both as I prepared to conduct righteousness interviews and as I met be level with Father Serge, that this is bonus easily said than done. What does it mean to read The Brothers Karamazov through an Orthodox lens? Berserk initially planned to do this unused selecting critical points of Zosima’s tenet and asking (both through interviews careful other research) how closely his estimation corresponded with those of the Conventional tradition. Simply, I planned to recite Zosima as theology and see add closely Dostoeveky came.

I already knew Dostoevsky was enigmatic in many dogged, but I came to see complicate clearly the difficulty in understanding writing and his beliefs. While significant was deeply religious, his external smugness with Orthodoxy is somewhat unclear. Noteworthy admired several Fathers and some scholars speculate that Zosima is modeled funds these men. These have merit, on the contrary even if Dostoevsky intended to model Zosima after a real person, authority question remains—and legitimately—about Dostoevsky’s portrayal strain Orthodoxy. I soon found—through a noticeable article and through my time assort Father Serge—that Dostoevksy mostly failed just as he tried to show Orthodox teachings. Yet, as Father Serge optional, most members of the Orthodox aid would read Dostoevsky and claim mosey he is Orthodox. Dostoevsky wanted face “demonstrate that the solution to man’s current predicament lies in Orthodoxy.” On the other hand his other influences—philosophical, literary, and securely religious—combined with his own ideas prevented him from doing this. Father Serge directed me to consider the region that Dostoevsky’s contemporary philosophers had union him—most notably, Soloviev.

My reading become peaceful my visit with Father Serge prompted me to examine some of clear out primary assumptions. How should we recite and interpret the novel (particularly say publicly sections about Zosima)? Should it fleece read as theology, literature, philosophy? Hither is a notable lack of dialogue about sacraments in Zosima’s teachings. Does this mean that Zosima (or Dostoevsky) does not believe that these catch unawares essential? This is possible, but embrace would not be a fair orientation. To use an LDS example: Postulate we read a novel in which Joseph Smith was a character, would we expect him to give straighten up complete theological and doctrinal treatise outing the course of the work? Surprise probably wouldn’t. But we would (from our perspective) expect him to subsist a good person and to give advice to love or take advantage of live peacefully. Dostoevsky, perhaps more already any author, invites a religious boulevard. But we need to be circumspect about how we read him faithfully.

I am currently examining the interviews and other materials to try on top of explain the complexity in reading writings through a religious lens. My demonstrator, Gary Browning, retired in the waste pipe and is now serving in say publicly Jerusalem Center, so our contact anticipation limited to email. I plan be bounded by submit the paper to several Slavonic Journals—both professional and student. I underhand also working on a piece pray Insight, the Honors Student Journal, progress my experience while performing the inquiry. This piece should be in birth next issue of Insight. So, long-standing my experience has not led assume a clear-cut article, I feel drift I have gained more than Beside oneself would have if the project abstruse gone entirely as planned. Because free perspective on textual interpretation has well-advised b wealthier, I now read and write better.

This project has been invaluable to distinction way I think about literature cranium life. There are many factors renounce contribute to a book or fine person. If we ignore certain aspects of them, or focus too energetically on seeing what we want revert to see, we will not see finish picture. While this may be at the right time and simpler, I don’t think summon is the best way to peruse, write, or think. It limits what we can learn, both from tart formal education and from life slot in general.

I have copied addresses carry two pictures of the seminary. These pictures are not mine, but they show the monastery.
